Berburu Laptop, Dua Kali Dikecewakan AMD

Dell seri Inspiron tahun 1998, laptop pertama tempat saya belajar menggunakan touchpad. Punya kakak yang baru pulang dari Belanda setelah 10 tahun di sana. Katanya harga baru saat itu 3000 USD, trus dia beli bekas 3000 Gulden. Tahun 1998, saya masih SMA kelas 3, bengong aja lihat Linux, dan VMware, dial-up internet, wong Windows 98 saja masih baru banget keluarnya.
Dari 1998 sampai 2002, saya kebanyakan pakai PC. Tahun 2003, saat Suteki berdiri, sehari-hari pakai laptop Gateway (punya Ricky). Cukup berat, tapi layar 12 inch, resolusi 800×600. Agar layarnya terlihat gede, biasanya pinjam monitor 17 inch di lab. Jadi tidak perlu lagi bawa-bawa harddisk dari rumah. Tidak tersedia touchpad, jadi harus mahir dengan joystick. Kalau tidak salah, harganya 4 juta saat itu. Tahun 2006 dijual murah: 1 juta.
Tahun 2004, DMR mulai laris. Bela-belain ke Mangga Dua, Jakarta buat cari laptop 12 inch yang baru, dapatnya merk Sotec. Awalnya terasa asing dengan namanya, tapi setelah nonton sinetron Jepang, ternyata Sotec jg banyak dipakai di sana. Prosesornya AMD, dan belum ada wireless. Beberapa bulan kemudian muncul Twinhead yang mirip banget tapi sudah centrino (Intel dan ada wireless-nya). Dibandingkan dengan Twinhead (punya kakak), Sotec kalah dari speed dan konsumsi baterai, padahal jeroannya sama banget (kecuali prosessor), termasuk baterainya.
Kurun waktu 2004-2005, saya beli beberapa laptop bekas untuk Suteki maupun Codena: Compaq Armada, Compaq Presario, Acer, Hyundai, Dave dan NEC. Saat ini Compaq Armada, Acer dan Dave sudah dijual lagi, Hyundai dan Compaq Presario mati total, NEC masih beroperasi. Untuk laptop baru, terpilih Asus seri M5200 buat Pak Direktur, masih bertahan hingga tulisan ini dibuat.
Petualangan belum berakhir, tapi baru saja dimulai. 2006-2007 adalah tahunnya Wearnes, Forsa dan Axioo. Kami hanya memilih yang terbaik, prosesornya Intel, batangannya dari MSI, dan kalau bisa harddisk-nya dari Fujitsu. Hasil pabrikan MSI bentuknya OK, tahan banting, berat masih dapat diterima, dan baterainya murah, tidak sulit dicari. Ada 4 unit Forsa, 6 unit Axioo dan 2 unit Wearnes yang kami beli. Kami juga punya 3 unit Acer (dengan harga setara 2 unit Forsa), tapi salah satunya hilang dicuri orang.
2007 hampir berakhir, kisah berburu notebook terus berlanjut. Kini lain dari biasanya, dapat Sony Vaio UMPC 4.5″, dan HP Tablet PC TX1221AU 12″, ceritanya mau membiasakan diri pakai touchscreen, menjelang kemunculan Komputer Meja dari Microsoft. Sony Vaio bermesin Intel, dan HP pakai AMD Athlon 64 X2.
Dari Gateway, Sotec, Wearnes, Axioo, dan HP (notebook yang saya pakai 4 tahun terakhir), hanya Sotec dan HP yang prosessornya AMD. AMD memang beda, maksud saya: payah, apalagi bagi yang terbiasa pakai Intel. Katanya sih dual core, tapi dari pengamatan saya terhadap grafik di task manager, tidak terlihat adanya pembagian tugas yang baik, layaknya Core2Duo-nya Intel. Walaupun score-nya (AMD Athlon X2 TK53-1,7GHz) di Vista lebih baik daripada Intel (Core Duo T2050, 1,6GHz), tapi untuk testing extract DMR, AMD sekali lagi…. payah! Sayang sekali, memori sudah 2 GB, HD Fujitsu SCSI 160GB 5400rpm, ada fingerscanner, built-in webcam, stereo mic, altec lansing speaker, lightscribe DVD-RW , touchscreen dan tablet, tapi prosessornya lemot. Jadi iri lihat rekan-rekan yang saya beri Acer dan Axioo. BTW, aneh ya, saya tidak tertarik dan tidak mau beli IBM maupun Toshiba.
